In the Cracks of a Dystopian City: The Fissures of Home in Leila (2017) by Prayaag Akbar

Résumé

Prayaag Akbar’s first novel, Leila (2017), is a dystopian tale retracing the establishment of a totalitarian regime relying on the division of the urban space and community. The walls and partitions follow social and religious lines, yet cracks and fissures repeatedly appear, elaborating possibilities of hope and resistance. Analysing the spatiality of the dystopic city, this essay wonders whether it can remain a home.
